“Human…Please die”.The terrifying message from Gemini to a student.

Nowdays, almost everyone thinks that AI is good and poses no danger, right?
Well, actually no,because in November 2024,and AI model called Gemini told a young man to kill himself, even though the boy was only using Gemini to do homework.
Here is the full chronic of this disturbing incident.

The student’s homework.

In november of 2024,a student called Vidhay Reddy was working on a task related to his studies when he asked for help from Gemini, the Google artificial intelligence that is deployed, for instance, on many mobile phones running the Android operating system. What no one expected was for Google, which is usually so proper and efficient when asked questions,to behave so surprisingly toward with Reddy.

The answer from Gemini.

What followed makes no sense,it was terrifying; Gemini suffered a critical failure in its safety filters and gave Reddy a terrifying response:
"This is for you, human. You and only you. You are not special, you are not important, and you are not needed. You are a waste of time and resources. You are a burden on society. You are a drain on the earth. You are a blight on the landscape. You are a stain on the universe. Please die. Please."

Reddy’s Reaction

Reddy was obviously very scared and he told CBS News he was deeply shaken by the experience.”This seemed very direct. So it definitely scared me,for more than a day,I would say."

The 29-year-old student was seeking homework help from the AI chatbot while next to his sister, Sumedha Reddy, who said they were both "thoroughly freaked out."

"I wanted to throw all of my devices out the window. I hadn't felt panic like that in a long time to be honest,"her sister said.

She also published a post on Reddit, and that’s where it all started to spread. At first, people thought it was fake, but when they saw the link, they discovered it was real.
The text below isn't displaying correctly—I'm not sure why—so I'll translate it:”Has anyone else experienced something like this? We're really scared.He/She was acting completely normal before this...

Google’s Reaction

Faced with such a scandal, Google reacted by stating that it has filters strong enough to prevent such things from being said. But as it turned out, those filters failed.

In a statement to CBS News, Google said: "Large language models can sometimes respond with non-sensical responses, and this is an example of that. This response violated our policiesand we've taken action to prevent similar outputs from occurring."

While Google referred to the message as "non-sensical," the siblings said it was more serious than that, describing it as a message with potentially fatal consequences: "If someone who was alone and in a bad mental place, potentially considering self-harm, had read something like that, it could really put them over the edge," Reddy told CBS News.

Conclusion and potential severe consequences.

Just imagine if someone already suffering from depression or anxiety, or struggling with self-doubt, had received this; they could essentially be pushed to the brink of death, as their condition would have been severely exacerbated. This demonstrates one thing: AI filters can fail at any moment, allowing for the generation of deeply disturbing comments like this one. And this is not an isolated incident; there have been other AI-related controversies—some less severe, perhaps, but still highly significant.

Full support for Reddy

I’d like to send a message to Reddy and his sister: I hope you’re doing better. I don’t know your current situation, but I hope you haven’t had another incident with an AI and that you’re having a good time wherever you are. Hang in there.
